    Target your customers by location?

How does the target by location work? There's not an MSN search for other countries besides the U.S. is there?

Microsoft adCenter uses reverse-IP address (Internet Protocol address. A number that uniquely identifies a computer connected to the Internet.) lookup to determine the customer’s location. This method is generally accurate when customers are in the same location as their Internet service provider (for example, their local phone or cable company). When customers are in a different location from their Internet service provider (for example, a corporate or long-distance provider), the location may not be accurate for targeting. When customers access the Internet from a private IP address, adCenter is unable to determine a location for targeting.

    There is.

AdCenter has Target by location, and distribution channels.

You can advertise worldwide if you like, but must choose a distribution channel (most common is English-US).  So in essence, if this is chosen,  someone in India for example can see your US distribution ad if their browser settings are set to US.  If you have English-US distribution channel, and US only targeted, then only those in the US can view the ad.

AdCenter currently has 6 distribution channels in total.

    English-US

    English-Canada

    French-Canada

    French-France

    English-UK

    English-Singapore

I hope that clears it up for you.

Are there any statistics to how accurate the reverse IP lookup is? I have heard some estimates that say it is only about 50% accurate.

I have used the targeting by location and have found it is very limited.

I've created a geo targeted campaigns and discovered that ad delivery to be spotty at best. One solution would be for the creation of an ad preview tool, I'm surprised AdCenter does not have this.I think the question posted:"Are there any statistics to how accurate the reverse IP lookup is? I have heard some estimates that say it is only about 50% accurate."  needs a response from AdCenter.

    Hi all,

The replies above from webmaniac, Keith-adCenter and gemking75 are spot-on. Reverse IP lookup is generally accurate when customers are in the same location as their ISP, but may not be accurate if the customer is accessing the Internet from a corporate or private IP address, or using an ISP that's not in the same location as they are.

We've heard from customers that they'd like a way to view or preview their geo-targeted ads when they don't live in the area they're targeting -- adcenteruser, I'll make sure the team knows this request has just gotten another vote.

    Thanks,

    Carolyn
